To begin with, when I tell someone that my dogs are line bred "Greif"
dogs, I am referring to being able to trace most of the dog’s ancestors to
"FC Greif Von Hundsheimerkogel". Now old "Greif" died in 1958, so my dogs
trace back to him through his notable progeny. The following description
of the history of the Greif line comes from two sources: The New
GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER by C. Bede Maxwell and a 1989 article in
the GSP News by Dr. Jim McCue titled “A Genetic Basis for Breeding
Better GSPs”, Part IV Strains & Prepotency.
In
her Fourth Edition of the New German Shorthaired Pointer, C. Bede Maxwell
refers to the backyard breeding of local bitches to the import “Greif”
that began this great line of dogs. Although "Greif’s" owner was not
interested in field trialing, Stan Head convinced him to campaign "Grief"
in field trials at the age of eight! Not only was "Greif" older than most
of the competitors, a lot of them were his sons and daughters! Dr. McCue
mentions that "Grief" produced 4 Duals, 8 Show and 13 Field Champions from
a few assorted local bitches in a limited number of breedings. The
foundation sires and dams that trace directly back to "Greif" reads like a
who’s who in the GSP world. The list includes the following:
